In order to improve the safety of fishery products at the Fish Handling and Processing Unit (UPI) in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic situation in Indonesia, the Directorate General of Strengthening the Competitiveness of Marine and Fishery Products, Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, is collaborating with the Global Quality and Standards Program for the SMART-Fish Indonesia. 2 held a Socialization of Guidelines for Sanitation and Hygiene Plus + Covid-19 Risk Control at UPI. Director General of PDSPKP - Artati Widiarti said KKP emphasized that various Fish Handling and Processing Units (UPI) must apply the principles contained in the Sanitation and Hygiene Plus guidelines for controlling the risk of COVID-19. The guidelines have been distributed to all UPIs in Indonesia and the Provincial/District/City Marine and Fishery Services. The KKP, especially the Directorate General of PDSPKP, as well as the local Marine and Fisheries Service are ready to provide guidance on the implementation of this guide. This is important, among other things, to maintain the productivity of the fishing industry in the midst of a pandemic, especially for large-medium scale upi that are oriented to the export market. All suppliers and UPS must strengthen the application of Sanitation and Hygiene Plus principles according to the guidelines to provide protection for employees and fishery products handled or processed. PDSPKP and its staff continue to carry out various risk mitigation efforts through massive coaching and socialization to suppliers and UPI for the strict and monitored implementation of the COVID-19 prevention protocol during fish handling and processing activities. By applying these guidelines consistently in accordance with their respective capabilities and capacities, suppliers or UPI are expected to continue to maintain their performance. In line with the National Chief Technical Advisor of the Global Quality and Standard Program (GQSP) Indonesia SMART-Fish 2 – Sudari Pawiro, assessed that the pandemic has forced the implementation of new or extra measures, including the UPS. Thus, although various sanitation and hygiene measures are routinely carried out by UPI, during this pandemic period, business as usual principles cannot be used. For example, the discovery of traces of the virus in fishery products by the Chinese authorities has prevented a number of exporters of fishery products from being exported to the country. Extra steps need to be taken, not only to protect employees but also to protect products from possible contamination by the covid virus.
